The Welsh Language Service Centre University of Wales Trinity Saint David are pleased to announce that the 2024 cohort of the Simultaneous Interpretation Postgraduate Qualification are graduating on the 8th of July.
University of Wales Trinity Saint David provides a Postgraduate Qualification in Simultaneous Interpretation under the leadership of Lynwen Davies. The Simultaneous Interpretation programme is unique in the sense that it is the only postgraduate qualification of its kind in Wales. The qualification receives support from Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru and sponsorship from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.
This unique and innovative course, delivered by the University's experts and lecturers, acts as a solid foundation for the students to succeed in a field that is necessary for public bodies to comply with the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards. This qualification offers the opportunity to refine core skills and gain fantastic workplace experience as part of this qualification, in conjunction with working full-time.
Every year students enjoy the opportunity of visiting the Senedd in Cardiff to learn more. This is what Sioned Bowen, a former student of the course had to say about the experience, “We had a very interesting visit to the Senedd to see different simultaneous interpretation techniques and how they interpreted in pairs, the type of equipment they use and how they had to adapt during Covid and simultaneous interpret online and in the chamber.”
For the first time this year, we offered a unique immersive experience to the students in our immersive suite. In one of the two immersive suits that UWTSD have, the students experienced a live meeting. The students considered and discussed key environmental aspects and logistics before discussing interpretation matters in detail. You may read more about this experience here.
Lynwen Davies, course leader said, “The use of VR and immersive technology has enriched our Welsh resources and professional training. Therefore, integrating VR into our Simultaneous Interpretation Certificate to create an engaging and realistic learning environment to support learning, bridging the University and the workplace. Warm congratulations to the successful students this year.”
Bethan Griffiths, a graduate of the Simultaneous Interpretation Postgraduate Qualification noted, “I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and have managed to gain confidence and valuable experience in the field of interpretation, by studying this postgraduate certificate. At the beginning of the course, interpretation was quite a new field for me personally, but the modules provided ongoing opportunity to develop and refine the skill of translation, through a variety of practical situations, and opportunities to shadow experienced interpreters. In the lectures I learned about the latest changes and developments, as well as hearing about the experiences of leading experts, learning from their expertise.”
Another two that are graduating this year is Sophie Williams and Sioned Bowen. The two have enjoyed studying the qualification and have developed their confidence in the field of simultaneous interpretation. This postgraduate certificate is taught through the medium of Welsh and here we have students telling us about their experience whilst on the course.
The 2025 cohort started their module 1 in January. Interested in gaining a practical, vocational qualification in simultaneous interpretation? Or want to learn a new skill or considering a career change?
