University of Wales Trinity Saint David provides a postgraduate qualification in Simultaneous Translation under the leadership of Lynwen Davies. The Simultaneous Translation programme is unique in the sense that it is the only postgraduate qualification of its kind in Wales. The qualification receives support from Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru and sponsorship from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. This course is offered part time.
For the first time this year, we offered a unique immersive experience to the students in our immersive suite. This is a purpose-built experience created to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, to develop the student's confidence in a practical and low-risk natural environment.
In one of the two immersive suits that UWTSD have, the students experienced a live meeting. The students considered and discussed key environmental aspects and logistics before discussing translating matters in detail. Then they had a chance to simultaneously translate one session individually, giving them a chance to refine their skills and gain confidence by working under pressure.
Lynwen Davies noted “Simultaneous Translation is a skill that needs to be practiced, and all the better the more experience the students get to refine their craft. Spending time in the immersive room will not only be a great chance to put into practice what was learnt in the classroom, but also strategies that will support them to cope with challenges; hearing difficulties, the best place to sit or stand etc. The immersive room offers a safe place to practice and make mistakes, and more importantly learn from their mistakes.”
This development reflects the University’s commitment to leading the way in innovative training and to provide progressive learning experiences that give our students the best opportunities to succeed.
Glyn Jenkins, Digital Experience and Engagement Manager noted: “Working with Rhagoriaith and the Simultaneous Translation programme has enabled our team to develop new progressive experiences. By harnessing our immersive capabilities and using our first-class Immersive Suite technology and VR, we are improving teaching and learning experiences, pushing the boundaries of traditional education and embracing the future of immersive learning.”
This is a recognized and suitable training for individuals who wish to venture into the field. During the course the students receive guidance from experienced translators who work professionally in the field. The course also offers the students to visit the Senedd in Cardiff and the group will be visiting on the 3rd of December to see the booths, watch the Prime Minister questions in the public gallery and chat with the team.
Our next course (Module 1) will be held on the 16th and 17th of January 2025. If you would like more information about the Simultaneous Translation Course, email [email protected]
