Jeremy Miles, MS, Minster for Education and Welsh Language will be launching our Postgraduate Certificate in Language Policy and Planning on the University of Wales Trinity Saint David stand at the National Eisteddfod on Friday at 2:30pm.
Joining him will be Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones who will be lecturing on the Certificate; Begotxu Olaizola, on behalf of the Alan R King Residential Chair in Sociolinguistics, the Institute of Etxepare, Basque Country; Catrin Llwyd, former practitioner and tutor on the Certificate; and Dr Lowri Lloyd, Rhagoriaith, University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
This certificate is an innovative qualification that responds to Welsh Government’s linguistic agenda of reaching a million Welsh speakers by 2050. On offer is a combination of academic and practical experiences to deepen an understanding of the main concepts in the field, both nationally and internationally.
Upskilling the workforce is key in order to give them the confidence to respond to the various challenges in our bilingual communities and workplaces. The value of this kind of qualification is its functionality in a field that’s developing quickly and is vitally important to reach the million Welsh speakers. In order to achieve the Government’s aim by 2050, this qualification is ideal for individuals working in the language policy and planning field whether in the public services sector, the health sector, the third sector or for newly-graduated individuals looking for a practical professional qualification.
This is a unique opportunity to study a contemporary and relevant subject on-line and through the medium of Welsh. It capitalises on the expertise of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and international experts in the field and the industry through interactive seminars, group discussions, case studies and practical workshops.
The virtue of such a qualification is the practical opportunities it offers practitioners engaged in the field in their day to day jobs, as well as the opportunity to network and share experiences with practitioners within the field and beyond during the course and after it, to share good practice and offer support.
Looking ahead to the launch, Kara Lewis, Programme Manager, said that this certificate
“represents the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s commitment to providing high quality education in this vital field. We believe this course will empower individuals to excel in the language policy and planning field leading to career development, significant personal growth and valuable and strategic contributions to reach the million Welsh speakers.”
Jeremy Miles, Minister of Education and Welsh Language, said:
“It’s a pleasure to be in attendance at the launch of this qualification which will contribute to creating a new generation of language planners and policy leaders in Wales. This is sorely needed as we work together to realise the exciting aim of a million Welsh speakers by 2050. This field can offer interesting and influential careers and this certificate will ensure that we have a workforce qualified to do the work.”
