Simultaneous Interpretation Scholarship awarded to Richard Timothy

Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru has decided to award the £1000 Simultaneous Interpretation Scholarship to Richard Timothy this year.

Richard, who works for the Equality and Human Rights Commission as a Senior Associate Welsh Language is looking forward to starting the course at University of Wales Trinity Saint David in January, 2026. He will start Module 1 along with other students at the end of the month.

Richard expressed;

“The course and qualification would not only give me the ability and confidence to simultaneously translate but also allow me to respond positively to applications internally and perhaps allow me to support some of our stakeholders who are in a similar situation.”

The Welsh Language Services Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David offer this Postgraduate Qualification annually under the guidance of Lynwen Davies.

The Simultaneous Interpretation programme is unique in the sense that it is the only postgraduate qualification of its kind in Wales. The qualification receives support from Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru and sponsorship from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. This unique and innovative course, delivered by the University's experts and lecturers, acts as a solid foundation for the students to succeed in a field that is necessary for public bodies to comply with the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards. This qualification offers the opportunity to refine core skills and gain fantastic workplace experience as part of this qualification, in conjunction with working full-time.

The Simultaneous Interpretation Scholarship is awarded annually by Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru. The society established this award in 2022-23 to meet the demand for more simultaneous interpreters.

Teleri Haf, Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru Chief Officer added;

“It’s a pleasure to offer a scholarship this year for students pursuing the Postgraduate Qualification in Simultaneous Interpretation. There is a huge shortage of simultaneous interpreters, and we are extremely grateful to University of Wales Trinity Saint David for offering recognised training for individuals wishing to venture into the field. We wish Richard all the best and look forward to welcoming him as a future member of the Society.”
