Language Planning Priorities in Wales and the Basque Country Today: round table discussion with Begotxu Olaizola and tutors and graduates from PGCert in Language Policy and Planning.

Join us for an informative discussion on Language Planning Priorities in Wales and the Basque Country Today with Begotxu Olaizola and tutors from PGCert in Language Policy and Planning, Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones and Catrin Llwyd. The discussion will be held on Thursday the 7th of August at 1pm on University of Wales Trinity Saint David stand.

The Certificate takes advantage of the rich linguistic experience offered by the bilingual context of Wales, as well as the recognised expertise of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. This innovative qualification is in response to the Welsh Government’s linguistic agenda of reaching 1 million Welsh speakers by the year 2050. It offers an element of academic study, deepening understanding of the major concepts in the field nationally and internationally and provides contemporary and necessary information along with applied experience.

Associate Professor, Steve Morris said, “I cannot over-emphasise the value of the opportunities students gain from studying for this qualification. They meet relevant Welsh Government officials, eminent Welsh and international academics as well as attending conferences/seminars in the field. The students noted that attending this course had raised their confidence and that they enjoyed the learning as well as appreciating the depth of the materials included on the course. This is a completely unique certificate in Wales and one that has the potential to grow into an indispensable qualification for anyone working in the field of policy and language planning.”

This certificate will appeal to graduates working in language planning within Welsh public institutions or third sector organisations in the community such as language officers, language planners, Government officers, policymakers and youth workers. It will also provide a solid foundation for graduate students wishing to develop a career involving bilingualism or multilingualism and enable them to apply core principles, together with knowledge, understanding and subject-based skills.

Manon Humphreys, a graduate of the Certificate, said, "Studying on this course has given me an unrivalled knowledge base, so that I can continue to act for the Welsh language confidently and accurately. To hear first-hand from experts from Wales and beyond has been particularly exciting."

Individuals are offered the opportunity to apply their learning to their experience and their own work. A further quality of this certificate is that it attracts individuals from various occupations who offer broad and contemporary perspectives. This is an opportunity for individuals to develop professionally and build confidence in their workplaces in an area that is expanding and becoming increasingly strategically important.
