About Us

Rhagoriaith is part of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Welsh Language Service Centre, established in 2017 to develop, provide and lead on the University’s language training provision internally for students and staff, as well as commercially at a national level.

The Centre provides language courses for students and University staff and has a key role in providing language improvement modules for the Athrofa students, which is the University’s Education Faculty. The Centre is also responsible for two postgraduate certificates, one in simultaneous translation that is part of a national Masters’ scheme, the MA Translation Studies, and a Certificate in Subtitling. This subtitling certificate is the only one of its kind in Wales through the medium of Welsh.

The Centre is the strategic leader for the Welsh Government Sabbatical Scheme courses and is the programme course moderator. The courses are provided at seven centres across Wales, including Cardiff University, Bangor University and Aberystwyth University. The Centre also deliver the courses directly to teaching practitioners in Mid and South West Wales, including Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Powys, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.

Additionally, the Centre offers Welsh language learning courses and language awareness training to external organisations to help them respond to the requirements of the Welsh Language Standards. This work contributes strategically to national agendas such as the Welsh Government’s target of reaching half a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

The Centre also contributes to and manages language projects that are housed within Canolfan Peniarth – the University’s publishing house. These are projects commissioned by the Welsh Government and contribute directly to raising standards of literacy and numeracy across the education sector in Wales.

The expertise of our staff and their experience of learning on the Welsh language Sabbatical scheme means they can offer top quality training. Language training can be offered on commercial terms to the education sector in Wales, whether these are courses for the further education sector or tailored INSET courses, in order to respond to the needs of the primary and secondary sectors.
